A = Afterthought

Having just stumbled upon the A to Z April Challenge,
my A will have to be Afterthought.

But my B = Books!
Somewhere along the path over the last year or so, I read a book whose author said you should know the genre you write in very well, and in order to do that you should strive to read 100 books in said genre.  Of course, as you are reading you should be learning a thing or two about what makes those books good or bad, thus improving your own writing.

Then I went to a conference where I heard a woman casually say she read two or three books a week.  That's right - I said THREE BOOKS A WEEK!  So I started to look back at my own reading and discovered I was lucky to be reading three books a month.

In the spirit of self-motivation and picking up the gauntlet, which she surely had thrown at my feet, I began pushing myself to read more and keeping track of my choices.

Last year, starting three months into the year, I ended up with 22 books on my list.  This year, at three months into the year, I have 13 books on my list, heading toward the goal of 52 books by New Year's.  Still not three books a week, but I'm getting there.

How many books are on your list?

  1. I read in all genres because each has their value. I do not read that many books, mainly because of time restraints. I am currently writing one short story, which will be available as a free e-book, the sequel to my current e-book and two novella's. That cuts reading time. I would say, that if you want to be a writer, don't limit your reading choices and grab books about writing. Writers must write, so do that too.

    Nice to meet you, Lynn.
    N. R. Williams, The Treasures of Carmelidrium.

  2. I used to read a lot, sometimes even three books a week, but that was before my two girls were born. They are three and one and on top of that I am trying to set up a jewelry business at home.
Now I am reading a book, and I started it two weeks ago, and I think I have read a third of it. It is a quite fat book, but even so...I would need some extra hours a day.

  3. I am a casual book reader...Seems that I have "back-slid" in my reading...I do always WANT to read but fast-paced living does put a crimp in it..I am now reading "The Lace Reader", and loving it...
Glad you found the A to Z...It is fun~!! We shall return for your Afterthought and the letter "C" on Monday...
    Thanks for sharing...

  4. Better late than never. loved your B word. I used to read alot when younger then got interested in poetry and am writing more than reading.

  5. I absolutely love to read, but it has definitely taken a back burner to the rest of life. I have made so many lists that it's shameful, as I usually only manage to read one or two books off the list each year. At this rate, I'd have to live to be 200 before I finished!! (ps, love your "a" post... I joined on the 2nd as well, and was rushing to finish 2 posts in one day!!)

  6. I love this! Books was my B too. And 52 books is my goal for the year. Sadly, I've found myself slightly behind. I can catch up though!
I'm going to follow you now.
